Why is Calligraphy Important in Japan?

💗💚~~Hello, this is Tea ceremony and Calligraphy shop Waplus Nara~~💚💗

Welcome to Tea ceremony and Calligraphy shop Waplus Nara.
Today, we would like to introduce why calligraphy is important in Japan.

Calligraphy is called “Shodo” in Japanese.

Japanese calligraphy is a special form of art in Japan. It is not only a way to write words. It is a way to show feelings, calm the mind, and connect with Japanese culture.

Actually, all Japanese students study calligraphy at elementary and junior high schools. They learn basic techniques of calligraphy there and sometimes submit their work to a contest. As I said before, Japanese schools offer calligraphy classes to help students appreciate the culture of calligraphy. Also, Japanese people write their New Year’s resolution on traditional Japanese paper. It is called “Kakizome” in Japanese, and it means “first writing of the year”. People use a brush and ink to write beautiful calligraphy on the first few days of January. If you would like to try calligraphy, I highly recommend that you try “Kakizome”.

Therefore, calligraphy is deeply connected to Japanese culture, and it is very familiar to Japanese people.
