Tea bowls

💗💚~~Hello, this is Tea ceremony and Calligraphy shop Waplus Nara~~💚💗

Welcome to Tea ceremony and Calligraphy shop Waplus Nara.

Today I would like to explain about matcha tea bowls.

Tea bowls originally referred to tableware for drinking tea, and were introduced to Japan along with tea during the Nara and Heian periods.
It is important that tea bowls look cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Matcha bowls can be broadly divided into two types: “summer bowls” and “winter bowls.” Summer bowls are shallow and wide, designed to allow the matcha to cool quickly in hot weather. On the other hand, winter bowls are deeper, allowing the matcha to stay warm for longer. Choosing a tea bowl that suits the season is one way to enjoy the tea ceremony and experience Japan’s four seasons.

The pattern painted on the tea bowl is also essential to the presentation. Particular attention is paid to tea bowls with floral designs. The idea is to anticipate the season.
In summer, choose designs of autumn scenery (such as Japanese pampas grass and bellflowers) to evoke a feeling of coolness, and in winter, choose designs of the arrival of spring (such as plum blossoms and cherry blossoms) to evoke a feeling of warmth.
The arrangements of a tea room, the tea utensils, and the spirit of the tea ceremony all emphasize a spirit of hospitality that is considerate of others.

At Tea Ceremony Shop Waplus Nara, we share the history of tea and how to enjoy matcha.

Sessions are held three times daily at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. If you’re visiting Nara, please do stop by our shop.
