Today I would like to talk about the theme of a tea gathering.

When hosting a tea gathering, the organizer(host) must consider the theme—

that is, the purpose of the gathering and the reason for inviting guests.

For example, at a New Year’s tea gathering, the theme is celebrating the new year.

Therefore, auspicious hanging scrolls are displayed, and tea utensils bearing auspicious patterns or inscriptions are used.

However, for regular seasonal tea gatherings, the season itself becomes the theme.

The intent is for both host and guests to gather seasonal utensils, wear kimonos appropriate for the season, and enjoy savoring the season together.

The theme is extremely important in a tea ceremony.
