Introducing traditional Japanese customs✨
March 3rd is 【Hinamatsuri(doll’s day)】🎎
In Japan, we celebrate Hinamatsuri on March 3.
Hinamatsuri is an occasion to pray for young girls’ growth and happiness❣❣
In Hinamatsuri, most families with girls display dolls called Hina-ningyo🎎
Hina-ningyo are wearing glittering kimonos👘
[What is Hinamatsuri anyway? ? ]
Hinamatsuri is an event held on March 3rd, the “Peach Festival,” to pray for the healthy growth and happiness of girls.
Hina dolls are displayed, peach blossoms are added, and people pray for healthy growth while enjoying foods unique to Hinamatsuri, such as hishi mochi and hina arare.
The “Peach Festival” is one of the five seasonal festivals that represent seasonal changes.
It was called “Joshi no Sekku,” but it came to be called “Peach Festival” because March 3rd on the lunar calendar is the season when peach blossoms bloom.
[What is the origin? ]
Hinamatsuri is said to have originated from the ancient Chinese “Joshi Festival”.
In ancient China, people would purify themselves in the river, ward off evil spirits, and hold a banquet.
When this was introduced to Japan, people would make paper Hina dolls and let them float down the river to take away bad things such as illness and injury.
It took the form of “Nagashi Hina” and “Hitogata Nagashi”🎎
During the Heian period, children of the nobility played house with dolls.
It was combined with “Hina Asobi” and gradually took on its current form.
It is said that people started celebrating by displaying Hina dolls like they do today around the Edo period🎵
Although people often display them now, there are still some places that celebrate by “Nagashi Hina” like in the old days❣❣
[Why do we display Hina dolls? ? ]
Hina dolls are said to take on misfortune in place of children and protect them from illness and accidents.
They are displayed with the hope that girls will be happy and protected from misfortune.
Events related to Hinamatsuri are being held all over the country❣❣
In Nara, the 【Isuien】
Hinamatsuri will be held from February 5th to March 3rd, 2025 at 【Isuien】
The “Kyokusui no Utage” is held in a garden with a flowing stream.
The Kyokusui no Utage is an elegant game in which attendees sit by the stream,
compose waka poems, etc., while a cup of sake flows past them from upstream,
and then drink the sake from the cup and let it flow to the next person.
Rare Hina dolls will be on display, including flat-displayed Hina dolls made to imitate this Kyokusui no Utage,
and Hina dolls in the form of children called “Chigo Hina”❣❣
Isuien has two gardens, the front garden, which was built in the Edo period, and the back garden, which was built in the Meiji period.
The two gardens are connected by the Mizuno Stream.
The back garden in particular is a borrowed scenery garden that incorporates the Great South Gate of Todaiji Temple, as well as Mt. Wakakusa, Mt. Kasuga, and Mt. Migasa.
It has been designated a national scenic spot as an excellent garden that well expresses the characteristics of the Meiji period.
