Major schools in Chado(tae ceremony)

~~☆☆☆💛Hello, this is Tea ceremony & calligraphy shop Waplus Nara💛☆☆☆~~

Chado (the way of tea), widely known overseas as a tea ceremony has developed as a traditional Japanese culture since ancient times.

Originally established by Sen no Rikyu, tea ceremony has branched out over its long history, and it is said that there are now more than 500 schools.

Sen no Rikyuu (Master of Chado)

Among these, the three schools known as the Sansenke (Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Mushakoji Senke) are recognized as the major schools within the tea ceremony tradition.
The Sansenke schools were founded by the descendants of Sen no Rikyū and, while inheriting his philosophy, each school has its own unique characteristics.

Here is a brief introduction to their characteristics.
Omotesenke is a school founded by the third son of Sen no Sōtan, Sen no Rikyū’s grandson.
Omotesenke inherits Sen no Rikyū’s spirit and is a strict school that adheres to traditional etiquette.

It always aims to perfect the tea ceremony, with the ideal of “flowing like water” in every movement and etiquette.

The Urasenke school originated when Sen no Sōtan, the grandson of Sen no Rikyū, gave his main house to his third son, Kōshin Sōsa, and built a residence on the north side (back side) of the house for his own retirement. The residence also had a tea room called Konichian, and it is said that the name Urasenke comes from the fact that the tea room was located on the back side of the main house(ura means back in Japanese).
Urasenke is a school that has sought new ways of practicing tea ceremony while preserving tradition, and is also known as an “open school.” As a result, it accounts for about half of the tea ceremony population in Japan and is the most populous school.

The Mushakoji Senke school was founded by Sen no Sōshū, the second son of Sen no Sōtan, the grandson of Sen no Rikyū.
Although the Mushakoji Senke school is smaller in scale compared to the Omotesenke and Urasenke schools, it places great importance on the “wabi-sabi” aesthetic of tea ceremony perfected by Sen no Rikyu and is known for its strict and conservative approach.
