Naramachi: A Historical District Steeped in Old Japan

Once part of the grounds of Gango-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important cultural property of ancient Nara,
Naramachi developed between the Edo and Meiji periods.

This charming area still retains traditional machiya townhouses and historic temples,
offering visitors a nostalgic glimpse into the past with its beautifully preserved streetscapes. ✨

★Top Photo Spots in Naramachi★

◆ Red Postbox (Round Shape)

・This design has become rare nationwide nowadays.

・Its vivid red color and round shape give off nostalgic Showa-era vibes.

◆ Naramachi Lattice House (Free admission / Groups require reservation)

・Recreates the interior of traditional machiya townhouses that dotted Naramachi from the late Edo to Meiji periods.

・Includes a garden, perfect for photos using natural light.

・Recommended for those who want to take their time shooting indoors.

◆ Machiya Cafés (e.g., Kanakana, House of Jewels)

・Nostalgic atmosphere created by converted traditional townhouses.

・Picturesque scenes with retro sliding doors, noren curtains, and charming entrances.

・“Eating shots” holding shaved ice or traditional sweets are also popular!

◆ Sarusawa Pond & Five-Story Pagoda (Kofuku-ji Temple)

・The view of the pagoda across the pond looks like a perfect postcard scene.

・The pond, pagoda, trees, and gradient sky make your kimono or yukata stand out beautifully.

・A serene atmosphere where nature and history blend harmoniously.

・Especially stunning in the early morning or calm weather, when the water surface reflects like a mirror.

Note: The Five-Story Pagoda at Kofuku-ji is currently under restoration (June 2022–March 2031) and cannot be viewed.

Escape everyday life and take a little journey in Nara.

The noren curtains fluttering down quiet alleys, the gentle sound of wind chimes by the veranda, and sunlight filtering through the trees onto stone paths—these are the charms of a peaceful summer in Naramachi 🎵
