Welcome to Tea ceremony and Calligraphy shop Waplus Nara.
Today, we would like to introduce RINSHO through calligraphy.
Calligraphy is called “Shodo” in Japanese.
Rinsho is a method of calligraphy study in which you use classic works or the calligraphy of a master as a model to study the character shapes and brushstrokes. This method has long been considered an essential and important part of calligraphy learning, and has been widely practiced in both China and Japan. This remains unchanged to this day.
Rinsho can be divided into three types.
Shape Rinsho: This method involves faithfully copying the shape of the model character, stroke for stroke. This is the most basic method of calligraphy study.
Irinsho: This method

involves learning not only the shape of the character, but also the style and brushstrokes of the model writer.
Bei Rinsho: This method involves setting the model down and writing it on your own to test your ability. This can be considered the final stage of rinsho study.
One of the important challenges in learning rinsho is ‘developing an eye for the model.’
Calligraphy skill will not improve beyond the level of your eye for it.
Before you start writing, it is very important to carefully look at the example and burn it into your memory, and then get into the habit of holding a brush.
