Welcome to Tea ceremony and Calligraphy shop Waplus Nara.
Today, we would like to introduce why calligraphy is important in Japan.

Kakizome, or calligraphy, is a New Year’s event that is typically held on January 2nd. In the past, the first day of work was January 2nd, and it was considered auspicious to combine Kakizome with the first day of work, which is why Kakizome was also held on January 2nd. It’s also said that people are more likely to improve their skills in tea ceremony or shamisen if they start on January 2nd.
Kakizome signifies becoming able to write beautifully and setting aspirations for the year.
When writing one’s aspirations for the year, it’s common to use four-character phrases such as “a fresh start” (a fresh start) and “a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.”
It’s customary to display the paper on which Kakizome has been written in a visible place in the room and then burn it at the “Dondo-yaki” (Dondo-fire) ceremony in mid-January.
It’s said that if the flames rise high during the Dondo-yaki ceremony, the goal written in Kakizome will be achieved.
Dondoyaki is a fire festival in which New Year’s decorations such as kadomatsu and shimenawa ropes are burned along with a tower made of straw and bamboo, and prayers are made for prosperity in business and safety in the home.
