A Special Meeting: The Spirit of Ichigo Ichie

In our tea room, you’ll find a hanging scroll with the words “Ichigo Ichie,” a Japanese concept meaning “a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.”

It reminds us to treasure every encounter because every moment is special and will never happen in quite the same way again.

During our shared tea experiences, guests from all over the world often sit together in the same tea room. Many of them are meeting for the very first time.

It’s always lovely to see guests smiling, chatting, and taking photos of one another. Even though they come from different countries and speak different languages, they can still share a wonderful moment together.

Watching these happy interactions makes me think, “This is Ichigo Ichie, too!”

Here in Nara, people from around the world come together to enjoy matcha and experience a little of Japanese culture. They may have been strangers when they arrived, but they leave with lovely memories of the time they shared.
