Himuro Jinja, cherry blossom

Himuro Shinto Shrine

The Himuro Shrine is known for its breathtaking array of cherry blossoms in late March and early April.
The weeping cherry, ‘Shidare-Zakura’ is the earliest cherry tree which blooms in Nara city to tell you the spring has come.

When the ancient capital was transferred to Nara in 710, an icehouse (J., Himuro) dedicated to the deity, Himuro Myōjin, was built upstream of the Yoshiki River at the foot of Mount Mikasa.

This site was moved to its present location in 1217 and the pillar of the shrine was constructed.
Ice in the icehouse was offered to the imperial court annually between April and September.
According to the shrine record or chronicle, an imperial festival in honor of the ice was first offered in 711
and continued thereafter as an annual event.
The celebration declined in the Heian period but has recently been revived and is now held annually on the first of May.
