Cherry blossom viewing dates back to the Heian period (around 8th century), when aristocrats would compose poems and play kemari (a soccer-like game) while gazing at the cherry blossoms.
\nGradually, farmers began holding banquets under the cherry blossoms to pray for a good harvest that year.
\nIt was around the Edo era (around 17 th century) that common people began to enjoy cherry blossom viewing.<\/p>\n
