One of the most memorable moments at our tea ceremony experience happened when a guest from overseas learned about the meaning of \u201cWa-Kei-Sei-Jaku\u201d (\u548c\u656c\u6e05\u5bc2)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We explained that these four words express the spirit of tea ceremony:<\/p>\n

Wa (\u548c) \u2014 Harmony<\/strong>
\nKei (\u656c) \u2014 Respect<\/strong>
\nSei (\u6e05) \u2014 Purity<\/strong>
\nJaku (\u5bc2) \u2014 Tranquility<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our guest listened carefully and seemed deeply moved by the meaning behind these words.<\/p>\n

Then, quite seriously, they said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to put these words up in our office.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We were touched by this simple comment.<\/p>\n

For us, it was a beautiful reminder that the spirit of tea ceremony is not something that belongs only in a Japanese tea room.<\/p>\n

The values of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility can be meaningful anywhere \u2014 even in a busy modern office far away from Japan.<\/p>\n

Taking a Little Japan Home<\/h3>\n

A tea ceremony experience may last less than an hour.<\/p>\n

But sometimes, a small moment during that experience stays with us much longer.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it is the warmth of the matcha.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it is the beauty of the tea bowl.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it is the quietness of the tea room.<\/p>\n

Or perhaps it is a single Japanese phrase that makes us stop and think about how we live our everyday lives.<\/p>\n

For our guest, it was Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We were delighted to see that something they encountered during their visit to Japan had become something they wanted to bring back to their own workplace.<\/p>\n

That is one of the things we love most about sharing tea ceremony with visitors from around the world.<\/p>\n

We don’t simply want our guests to experience Japanese culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We hope they find something that speaks to them personally \u2014 something they can carry with them long after they leave the tea room.<\/p>\n

And if Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku<\/strong> ends up on the wall of an office overseas, perhaps a little of the spirit of Japanese tea ceremony has found a new home.<\/p>\n
