/>

[Origin of Wakakusa Yamayaki]

At the top of Mount Wakakusa, there is a tomb called “Uguisuzuka Kofun”, a keyhole-shaped tomb.

Long ago, ghosts would come out of this tomb and frighten people, but if the mountain was burned, the ghosts would stop.

There was also a long-standing superstition that if the mountain was not burned by around January, something bad would happen.

It is said that people passing by the mountain started setting fires on their own! !

This resulted in numerous incidents of fires approaching the grounds of Todaiji Temple.

In December 1738, the Nara Magistrate’s Office put up a sign prohibiting arson on Mount Wakakusa!

However, arson continued after that, and the danger of fires spreading to nearby temples and shrines continued, so

Towards the end of the Edo period, the Nara Magistrate’s Office and Todaiji Temple, which are adjacent to Mount Wakakusa, and the neighboring temples and shrines were present to burn the mountain. !

Thus, it is said that the origin of the mountain burning was as a festival and memorial service to appease the souls
