🍀Enjoy Kyoto Even More in Kimono🍀

Beautiful Kimono Etiquette: How to Sit Gracefully in a Tatami Room

Kyoto is home to many beautiful places where you may spend time in traditional Japanese-style rooms, such as historic temples, machiya cafés, and Japanese gardens. Recently, matcha experiences and tea ceremony activities have also become increasingly popular among visitors.

If you’re wearing a kimono, you’ll want to do more than just take beautiful photos—you’ll want to enjoy sightseeing in Kyoto while keeping your kimono looking elegant throughout the day.

Many of our guests ask us:

“How should I sit in a traditional Japanese room?”

“Will my kimono become untidy if I sit down?”

The good news is that by paying attention to just a few simple movements, you can help prevent your kimono from becoming wrinkled or out of shape while maintaining its beautiful appearance.

In this article, we’ll introduce some simple tips for sitting gracefully in a tatami room during your Kyoto trip.

🌸 Why Should You Adjust Your Kimono Before Sitting?

Unlike everyday clothing, the position of your kimono is very important.

If you sit down without adjusting it first, it may cause:

  • Your kimono hem to become untidy
  • Wrinkles in the fabric
  • Your obi (kimono belt) to shift, making your kimono easier to come undone

Simply smoothing the front of your kimono before sitting helps maintain a beautiful silhouette and keeps you comfortable throughout the day.

There’s no need to worry about complicated etiquette.

Think of it as a small tip that helps you enjoy Kyoto sightseeing while wearing your kimono.

🌸 Basic Steps Before Sitting

When sitting on tatami, avoid dropping down quickly.

Instead, pause for a moment and move slowly.

First, gently smooth the front hem of your kimono with both hands. You don’t need to pull it tightly—just adjust it enough to keep it neat and balanced.

If you’re wearing a furisode (long-sleeved kimono), neatly arrange both sleeves and place them together on your lap.

This not only prevents the sleeves from touching the floor but also creates a more elegant appearance in photographs.

Once your hem and sleeves are arranged, slowly bend your knees and lower yourself gently.

Sitting down too quickly can place unnecessary strain on your obi and kimono, causing them to shift.

🌸 Tips for Sitting in Seiza

After sitting in the traditional seiza position, gently straighten your back while keeping your shoulders relaxed.

A natural posture helps prevent your obi from becoming compressed and keeps your kimono looking beautiful.

If you’re wearing a furisode, be sure to keep both sleeves together on your lap so they don’t touch the floor.

This small detail adds even more elegance to your overall appearance.

🌸 Stand Up Slowly

Many people think sitting down causes a kimono to become untidy.

In fact, standing up is often when your kimono is most likely to shift.

Avoid standing up too quickly.

Place your hands lightly in front of you and slowly raise your body.

Once you’re standing, gently smooth your kimono again before continuing your Kyoto adventure.
