During this season, many visitors choose a yukata instead of a kimono. Yukata are lighter, cooler, and more comfortable to wear as temperatures rise, making them ideal for sightseeing in Kyoto during the summer months.

Many people associate yukata with summer festivals and fireworks events. However, yukata are also a wonderful choice for daytime sightseeing. Walking through the traditional streets of Higashiyama or Gion while dressed in a beautiful yukata allows you to experience Kyoto from a different perspective and creates unforgettable travel memories.

Choosing matching colors, coordinating patterns, and taking memorable photos along Kyoto’s scenic streets are all part of the experience.

One of the most noticeable differences between a kimono and a yukata is the footwear. Kimono are traditionally worn with tabi socks and zori sandals, while yukata are usually worn barefoot with geta sandals. The combination of a yukata and geta creates a refreshing and authentic summer look that perfectly matches Kyoto’s seasonal atmosphere.

If you have never worn geta before, there are a few simple tips to help you walk comfortably. First, avoid placing your feet too far forward into the thong strap. Instead, gently hold the strap near the base of your toes. This reduces pressure on your feet and makes walking easier. It is also helpful to take slightly smaller steps rather than long strides, allowing the sandals to move naturally with each step.

Many first-time visitors worry that geta may be difficult to walk in, but most people quickly become comfortable. As you stroll through Kyoto, enjoy the pleasant “karan-koron” sound of the wooden sandals, a charming sound often associated with the Japanese summer.
