Hello,
This is Waplus Kyoto Yasaka Shrine Store.
When it comes to sightseeing in Kyoto, one experience you shouldn’t miss is strolling around the city in a kimono.
Walking through the charming streets of the Yasaka Shrine and Gion area in traditional attire creates a truly special and memorable experience ✨
Enjoy seasonal scenery while taking photos and exploring the city—this is one of the unique charms of wearing a kimono 🍁🌸
At the same time, many people feel a bit worried before trying it for the first time:
“Isn’t it difficult to walk in a kimono?”
“Can I walk for a long time?”
“Will the sandals hurt my feet?”
These are very common concerns we hear from our guests.
It’s completely natural to feel this way, especially if it’s your first time wearing a kimono.
Because it’s different from your usual outfit, you may be concerned about comfort and fatigue.
But please don’t worry 🌿
With just a few simple tips and a slight adjustment in how you move, wearing a kimono can actually be quite comfortable.
In fact, many of our guests tell us:
“It was easier to walk than I expected.”
“I got used to it very quickly.”
“I really enjoyed walking at a slower pace.” 😊
By slightly adjusting your walking style, you can comfortably enjoy sightseeing until your return time.
Moving at a relaxed pace also allows you to appreciate Kyoto’s scenery more deeply 🍃
Here are some easy steps to help you walk comfortably in a kimono, even if it’s your first time.

Step 1|Start walking slowly 🚶♀️
Right after changing into your kimono, begin by walking slowly.
Trying to walk as usual may feel awkward at first because of the hem and the different movement.
Even if it feels unfamiliar, your body will naturally adjust after a few minutes. Think of the first few minutes as a “warm-up” time.
▶ Tip: Starting slowly will make the rest of your day much more comfortable ✨
▶ Avoid: Walking fast or taking big steps right away
Step 2|Take smaller steps 👣
Because of the kimono’s length, taking large steps can feel restrictive.
Instead, try walking with slightly smaller steps than usual.
This will help you move more comfortably and also prevent your kimono from becoming disheveled.
▶ Tip: Smaller steps also create a more elegant appearance 🌸
▶ Kyoto tip: Makes it easier to walk in busy areas like Gion and Kiyomizu
Step 3|Step gently from your toes 🌿
When walking, place your foot down gently starting from your toes.
Avoid stomping—soft, quiet steps will improve your balance and reduce fatigue.
This technique also helps reduce strain when wearing traditional sandals.
▶ Tip: Quiet steps = less fatigue 🍀
▶ Photo tip: Your movements will look more graceful in photos 📸
Step 4|Keep your back straight ✨
Posture plays a big role in how comfortable you feel.
If you slouch, it can put extra strain on your legs and back.
Gently straighten your back and lift your gaze slightly. This naturally improves your balance and makes walking easier.
▶ Tip: Good posture improves both comfort and appearance ✨
▶ Bonus: Your photos will look even better
Step 5|Take your time on stairs and slopes ⛩️
Kyoto has many stone paths, slopes, and stairs.
In these areas, it’s important to move slowly and carefully.
Be mindful of the kimono hem and take one step at a time. Avoid rushing to stay safe.
▶ Tip: Slow and steady is the key 🌿
▶ Example: Especially important around Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu area
Step 6|Take breaks before you feel tired ☕️
Even if you feel fine, taking breaks early is very important.
Wearing a kimono uses your body differently, so fatigue can build up without you noticing.
Enjoy a short rest at a café or bench—this is also part of the kimono experience.
▶ Tip: Resting early helps you enjoy the whole day 🍡
▶ Recommendation: Gion and Higashiyama have many great rest spots
Step 7|Get used to the footwear 👘
Traditional sandals (zori or geta) may feel unfamiliar at first, but you’ll quickly get used to them.
Try to stay relaxed and avoid putting too much pressure on your feet.
▶ Tip: Start with short distances 👣
▶ Note: Feel free to ask our staff if you have any concerns
⏰ How long do you need to enjoy a kimono experience?
Many people think they need a full day, but that’s not necessarily true 😊
Even 2–3 hours is enough to fully enjoy walking around in a kimono.
The Yasaka Shrine and Gion areas are compact and full of highlights, making them perfect for short visits.
If you’re worried about walking for a long time, don’t worry—you can still enjoy the experience comfortably 🌿
🌿 Morning Plan (Return by 12:00 PM)
We also offer a morning plan where you visit in the morning and return by 12:00 PM.

💡 Tips to enjoy even a short visit
